Please note there is a difference between Lagos state and Lagos Metropolitan Area. Lagos state is situated in the southwestern geopolitical zone of Nigeria. It is the smallest in size among the 36 states we have in Nigeria. It is the most economically important state and also the major financial center in the country. If it were a country would have been the fifth largest economy in Africa.

This is a state a lot of people dream of visiting, it has a tremendous amount of people occupying the city. No wonder the total population is disputed between the official Nigerian Census of 2006 and a much higher figure claimed by the Lagos State Government.

Lagos State is surrounded by Ogun state in the north and east and shares boundaries with the Republic of Benin in the west. The southern borders of Lagos the Atlantic Ocean. 22% of its 3,577 km2 are lagoons and creeks.

Logos initial name was Eko before the adoption of the Portuguese name of Lagos which referred mainly to the Island. The Aworis where the first to settle in Eko, they were the fishermen and the hunter that originally came from Ile-Ife to the coast. The name was from the Yorubas. “Oko” meaning cassava farm or “Eko” meaning war cam.

Over 650 years ago, the Oba of Bini sent warriors to Eko who were received in a welcoming manner by the residing Awori fishermen. The Bini Prince, Ado, who led the war party, was asked to become their leader. From that point on, Eko belonged to Yoruba.

In Nigeria, Lagos state has been the most effective center and in West Africa’s as a whole, it has the most financial system and is surrounded by so many organization such as insurance firms, micro-finance/community banks, megabanks, discount houses, and capital market. It can simply be said that it is the heart of Nigeria.

The National Financial Sector Strategy [FSS] and the Nigerian Government’s has envision Lagos state as the nation’s financial center and as the headquarters of the Nigeria Stock Exchange. It is the most active and largest exchange in sub-Saharan Africa.

According to the Investments and Securities Act [ISA], 2007 to adjudicate on all capital market disputes there exist The Investments and Securities Tribunal in Lagos. Lagos state is the gateway to Nigeria’s and ECOWAS economy. All national financial and professional regulatory authorities and the headquarters/regional offices are all in Lagos.

17.5 million is what the Lagos State Government estimated for the population while the National Population Commission of Nigeria put it to be over 21 million in 2016.Nov 21, 2018. However, there is a discrepancy in the figure and is unreliable.
